Lowering Your Car: Springs, Struts, Coilovers or Air Suspension?
Lowering a car is one of the most popular modifications enthusiasts make—and for good reason.
A properly lowered car can completely change its appearance. It reduces wheel gap, gives the car a more aggressive stance and, when done correctly, can also improve handling by lowering the vehicle's center of gravity and changing how the suspension responds.
But how you lower the car matters.
You can spend a few hundred dollars on lowering springs or several thousand dollars on a sophisticated coilover or air-suspension setup.
So what's the difference?
Lowering Springs → Springs + Performance Struts → Coilovers → Air Suspension
Option 1: Lowering Springs
Lowering springs are usually the least expensive and simplest way to lower a car.
Instead of replacing the entire suspension assembly, you're replacing the factory springs with shorter, typically stiffer springs.
Depending on the vehicle and spring manufacturer, the drop can range from fairly subtle to very aggressive.
Why Choose Lowering Springs?
The biggest advantage is simple:
Price.
A good set of lowering springs can dramatically improve the stance of a car without requiring a huge investment.
For someone who mainly wants to eliminate excessive wheel gap and give their daily driver a sportier appearance, springs can make a lot of sense.
Quality lowering springs can also improve handling.
The lower center of gravity combined with increased spring rates can reduce body roll and make the car feel more responsive during cornering.
But there is an important consideration.
You're Still Using the Factory Struts and Shocks
Your factory dampers were designed around the height and spring rate of the original suspension.
Install a shorter and stiffer spring, and you're changing the conditions under which those dampers operate.
That doesn't mean lowering springs on factory dampers are automatically a bad idea. Many mild lowering springs are designed specifically to work with OEM dampers.
However, the more aggressive the drop and spring rate become, the more important proper damper selection becomes.
And if your factory shocks already have a lot of miles on them, installing lowering springs can make an already worn suspension much more noticeable.
Best for:
Budget-conscious street cars and owners primarily looking for improved appearance with a mild performance benefit.
Option 2: Lowering Springs + Performance Struts/Shocks
This is the option that sometimes gets overlooked.
Instead of installing lowering springs on your original dampers, you pair the springs with performance shocks or struts designed to work with lowered vehicles.
This can be a fantastic street setup.
The springs determine much of the ride height and spring rate, while the upgraded dampers are better suited to controlling the movement of those springs.
Why This Setup Makes Sense
You get many of the benefits people are looking for from coilovers without necessarily needing all of the adjustability.
If you already know that you want your car approximately one inch lower, do you really need several inches of height adjustment?
Maybe not.
A quality spring and damper combination can give you improved handling, reduced body roll, better suspension control, a sportier appearance and potentially excellent street ride quality.
And once it's installed, there's very little to mess with.
The Downside
Your ride height is essentially fixed.
If the springs lower the car 1.2 inches, that's approximately where the car is going to sit.
You can't decide next weekend that you want another half-inch drop.
You also generally don't have the extensive damping adjustments available on higher-end coilovers.
But for a street car?
That simplicity can actually be an advantage.
Best for:
Street-driven performance cars where ride quality, handling and reliability are more important than constantly adjusting ride height.
Option 3: Coilovers
For many enthusiasts, coilovers are the sweet spot.
A coilover combines the spring and damper into an integrated adjustable suspension assembly.
The biggest attraction is adjustability.
Most quality coilovers allow you to adjust ride height, while many also provide adjustable damping. Higher-end systems can offer considerably more sophisticated suspension tuning.
Ride Height Adjustment
This is one of the biggest reasons people choose coilovers.
Instead of accepting whatever ride height a lowering spring gives you, you can fine-tune the stance.
Want a mild drop?
No problem.
Want the tires sitting almost flush with the fenders?
You can do that too—as long as the suspension geometry, tire clearance and available travel allow it.
This makes coilovers particularly useful when you're trying to dial in a specific wheel and tire setup.
Adjustable Damping
Many coilovers also allow you to change how firmly the dampers control suspension movement.
Depending on the system, you can adjust the suspension for street driving, spirited driving or track use.
But there's something important to understand:
More Adjustment Doesn't Automatically Mean Better
A properly engineered non-adjustable damper can outperform a cheap coilover with 32 adjustment settings.
The quality of the damper matters tremendously.
A budget coilover and a high-end motorsport coilover might both advertise adjustable ride height and damping, but that doesn't mean they're remotely equal.
Internal damper design, valving, spring quality, corrosion resistance, adjustment consistency and durability can vary dramatically.
Coilovers and Track Driving
This is where quality coilovers can really shine.
For drivers who attend autocross or track days, coilovers can allow the suspension to be tailored to the car, tires, track and driving style.
Combined with proper alignment settings, tires and suspension geometry, a good coilover setup can dramatically improve how confidently a car behaves at the limit.
But don't assume that:
Lower = Faster
Lowering a car too far can reduce suspension travel and negatively affect suspension geometry.
The goal should be to make the suspension work better—not simply make the car as low as physically possible.
Best for:
Enthusiasts who want adjustable ride height, performance-oriented handling and the ability to fine-tune their suspension.
Option 4: Air Suspension
And then we get to air.
Air suspension approaches lowering from a completely different direction.
Instead of traditional steel coil springs supporting the vehicle, an air-suspension system uses air springs or air bags.
Air pressure controls the vehicle's ride height.
A typical aftermarket air system includes:
- Air springs
- Compressor
- Air tank
- Air lines
- Valves
- Management system
- Height and/or pressure sensors
- Controller or smartphone controls
The result is something the other suspension options can't easily provide:
Adjustable Ride Height at the Push of a Button
Drive around at a practical height.
Pull into a parking lot.
Hit a button.
Drop the car.
That's a huge part of the appeal.
You can achieve an extremely aggressive parked stance without having to drive around at that same height.
And for very low cars, being able to raise the vehicle for steep driveways, speed bumps or rough roads can be incredibly useful.
But Isn't Air Suspension Only for Show Cars?
Not anymore.
Modern performance air-suspension systems have become far more sophisticated.
Quality air suspension paired with good dampers and proper management can provide very respectable handling while giving the owner something conventional lowering springs simply can't:
On-demand ride-height control.
That said, if maximum consistency and performance on a road course are the priority, most serious track-oriented builds still tend to favor a quality conventional spring-and-damper or coilover setup.
The Downsides of Air Suspension
The biggest issue is complexity.
With lowering springs, you have a spring.
With coilovers, you have a spring and damper assembly.
With air suspension, you're adding compressors, tanks, electrical components, air lines, fittings, valves and electronic management.
That's simply more equipment that can potentially require maintenance or troubleshooting.
Air suspension is also typically the most expensive of these options.
Installation itself is considerably more involved than simply installing springs or coilovers.
But for the right build, nothing else provides quite the same combination of stance, practicality and on-demand ride-height adjustment.
So Which Suspension Setup Is Best?

There's no single winner because these systems are aimed at different owners.
For the Daily Driver
If you simply want to eliminate some wheel gap and improve the look of your car without spending a fortune, quality lowering springs may be all you need.
For the Street Performance Car
If you want a lowered stance but place a high priority on ride quality and predictable suspension behavior, lowering springs paired with matched performance dampers can be one of the best combinations.
For the Enthusiast or Track Car
If you care about getting the ride height exactly where you want it and want additional control over suspension behavior, coilovers are probably the enthusiast sweet spot.
For the Show Car or Extremely Low Street Build
If you want the ability to put the car extremely low while parked but raise it whenever necessary, air suspension is difficult to beat.
Don't Forget the Alignment
Regardless of which option you choose, there's one step that shouldn't be ignored:
Get an alignment.
Lowering a vehicle changes suspension geometry.
Depending on the car and how far it's lowered, that can affect camber, toe and other alignment characteristics.
Incorrect toe in particular can destroy a set of tires surprisingly quickly.
Some vehicles may require adjustable control arms, camber bolts or other components to bring alignment back into the desired range.
Don't spend thousands of dollars on suspension, wheels and tires only to skip the alignment afterward.
Don't Lower a Car Just to Make It Low
This is probably the biggest takeaway.
Lowering a vehicle can absolutely improve its appearance and handling.
But there is a point where going lower starts working against you.
Too little suspension travel can cause the car to ride poorly or contact the bump stops frequently. Excessive lowering can negatively affect suspension geometry, create tire-clearance problems and make the car difficult to drive on normal roads.
The best suspension setup isn't necessarily the lowest one.
It's the setup that matches how you actually use the car.
For some people, that's a mild set of lowering springs.
For others, it's lowering springs paired with performance struts.
For the enthusiast who wants to dial in both stance and performance, it's coilovers.
And for the person who wants to park their car practically on the ground and then raise it before leaving the parking lot?
That's exactly why air suspension exists.
